Tunis, the capital city of Tunisia, serves as the administrative center of the eponymous governorate. Nestled by a lagoon near the ancient site of Carthage, it is connected to the Mediterranean Sea by a navigable canal stretching approximately 10 kilometers that leads to the port of La Goletta.

Originally established as a modest village overshadowed by historic cities like Carthage, Kairouan, and Mahdia, Tunis was officially designated as the capital on September 20, 1159 (5 Ramadan 554 according to the Islamic calendar) by the Almohad dynasty. This status was later reaffirmed under the Hafsid dynasty in 1228 and remained significant following the country’s independence on March 20, 1956.

Today, Tunis stands as the economic and commercial heart of Tunisia. The extensive network of roads, highways, and airports highlights its role as a national transportation hub. This situation is largely due to a prolonged historical evolution, particularly influenced by a centralistic vision that has fostered a concentration of key institutions within the capital.
